چکیده

The addition of bonding groups in DOCSIS 3.0 allowed the bandwidth to be increased to the end user. Max-min fair packet scheduling provides for fairness among those users, but due to the restrictions of the bonding groups, available bandwidth may go unused. This research investigates the dynamic remapping of the flows to allow more effective util ization of the system bandwidth. An online algorithm was developed, using the concept of competit ive analysis, to monitor unutil ized bandwidth and current demands and make adjustments in the flow-to-channel mappings to improve the util ization of available system bandwidth. We show that our algorithm provides near optimal results and greatly improves bandwidth util ization over the case without remapping. On fairness and application performance of active queue management in broadband cable networks

We evaluate the performance of modern delay-based active queue management (AQM) algorithms in downstream DOCSIS 3.0 cable environments. Our simulation-based study involves scenarios that include tiered service levels and application workloads that include FTP, HTTP-based adaptive streaming (HAS), VoIP, and web traffic. Our results show that AQM maintains target queuing delays and consequently p...

Downstream Bandwidth Management for Emerging DOCSIS-based Networks

In this dissertation, we consider the downstream bandwidth management in the context of emerging DOCSIS-based cable networks. The latest DOCSIS 3.1 standard for cable access networks represents a significant change to cable networks. For downstream, the current 6 MHz channel size is replaced by a much larger 192 MHz channel which potentially can provide data rates up to 10 Gbps. Further, the cu...

On the Performance Modelling and Optimisation of DOCSIS HFC Networks

The DOCSIS protocol defines the MAC and physical layer operations governing two-way transmission of voice, video and multimedia data over HFC cable networks, thus constituting a complex system with many interdependent parameters. This tutorial employs simulation and analytic methodologies for the performance modelling and optimisation of DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 HFC networks with particular focus on the ...

Validating an ‘ns’ Simulation Model of the DOCSIS Protocol

The number of households and businesses using HFC cable networks for Internet access is rapidly approaching 20million in the United States. The cable industry has standardized on a single MAC and physical layer standard, the Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS). We have implemented a simulation model of the DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 MAC and physical layer using the ‘ns’ simulation packa...
